Shalva Mshvelidze (1904-1984) belonged to the earlier generation of Georgian composers that achieved prominence before WW2. Although being very much interested in oriental classical music (some of his works incorporate the Indian and Burmese elements), he was among the ones who started to push Georgian folklore into more symphonic territories resulting in the folksy classical music explosion that started in late 40s and defined the newer period for decades to come. "Mindia" and "Zviadauri" are two of Mshvelidze's most famous symphonic poems, inspired by Vazha-Pshavela's legendary and unique poetry.

Conductor: Givi Munjashvili. Soloist: Temur Janelidze.

Georgian professional music is based on a rich and ancient musical folklore. Georgian professional music also played a large role in the development of the Georgian Orthodox music, which as well as the Georgian folk song, is polyphonic. Georgian national composing school was established on the eve of the XIX-XX -  creations  of Z. Paliashvili, M. Balanchivadze, Dmitry Arakishvili, N. Sulkhanishvili , Dolidze.

In 60-ies of XIX century  "tergdaleulebi» started activities related to national culture, language, faith. By the time music textbooks (Ioane Bagrationi «Kalmasoba») were published, Italian opera team arrived to Tbilisi, Opera Theatre was opened in 1851. Musical arts centers moved from aristocratic salons to public theaters and concert halls. In 1887 construction of a new opera house was completed, "Georgian Chant Restoration Committee» (1860 sec.) was established, activities related to gathering, recording and publishing of Georgian folk songs and hymns and motets had been started. Professional musicians educated in Russia and Italy emerged:  Philemon Koridze, Kharlamp Savaneli, Aloysius Mizandari, Andrea Karashvili, Vano Sarajishvili, Ia Kargareteli and others.

Establishing of the  «Georgian Chorus» by Lado Aghniashvili in 1885 and first performance of Georgian folk songs on concert stage was a one of the major events.  The first Georgian secular music education centers - studios, courses, schools, colleges (1886), the Conservatory (1917) were opened. Zakaria Paliashvili appears as the founder of Georgian classical opera (opera-tragedy "Absalom and air», 1991.), founder of the folk music researcher D.  Arakishvili, who also created opera "Legend of Shota Rustaveli», Meliton  Balanchivadze – author of «Tamar Tsbieri». M. Balanchivadze - author of first classic romances, composer Viktor Dolidze, who wrote first comic opera "Keto and Kote".  Niko Sulkhanishvili’s main contribution is that he founded the secular choral art delivered by Georgian professional singers.

It must be mentioned significant contribution to the development of Georgian musical culture of Shalva Mshvelidze, Andrea Balanchivadze, Aleksi Machavariani, Otar Taktakishvili, Sulkhan Tsintsadze, Revaz Lagidze,  Gia Kancheli and other composers.

Georgian sacred music is an integral part of the musical culture of the Georgian nation. It is based on IV century achievements and traditions – in a line with conversion to Christianity. From IX century, the whole system was  set up to teach the chanting in the famous cathedrals and monasteries (Ikalto, Gelati, Graham, Mtskheta) where seminaries and academies were founded. At that time honor was given to music teaching, forming a choral choirs, the original Georgian chants were composed.

On October 2, 2019, an outstanding composer of our time Giya Kancheli passed away.

The web-site is created for education and entertainment purposes and is devoted to Georgian music. Initially, it was designed by Mrs. Maya Urushadze (1999) and then the Fund Lana re-designed it and added new music pieces to it. Currently, it belongs to Dr. Teimuraz Kancheli and is non-commercial, free for use resource.

I am permanently re-arranging the structure and the content of the website. At the beginning of 2014 the website was dramatically redesigned and now it is possible to listen to streaming music using mobile phones and Apple Macs.

We added some explanations in certain cases and continuously working on the widening of the repertoire of music presented on this website. We started with RealAudio format but then discovered that the Windows Media Audio format provides much better quality when using audio files of the equal size. Now we use mp3 format.

Some of our visitors ask us if the purchase of CDs that contain music from this website is possible. Yes, it's possible. Buy CD. It's also possible to purchase classical music CDs and live concerts on DVDs. The same applies to sheet music. We have rich collection of Georgian sheet music is available for purchase. You will be able to download it in pdf. You can find some samples on the website.

What are our plans? We plan to add more streaming music on the web-site and more stories on Georgian music and it's authors. We plan to enrich the e-shop that will offer more music CDs, sheet music, DVDs, crafts, art-works etc.

We would like to emphasize that all the documents that are displayed or offered for individual listening at home do not violate the intellectual property of authors and other right holders. According to the Georgian law Copyright and Adjacent Rights (1999-22-06), Article 3, Section 23. Use of work without the authorization of the rights holder or the payment of any royalty:

"It shall not be unlawful, without the authorization of the right holder or the payment of any royalty, but with obligatory notification of author and source of used work:
. . .
b) fair use of parts of the published works for illustrations purposes in publications, radio and TV broadcastings, in audio and video recordings of educational nature in the volume that corresponds to set up goals."

The whole website and audio files are of educational nature (the low quality of used encoding technology and mono sound mp3 formats with limited bitrate proves that fact. In some cases (music scores and some articles) the permission of authors is obtained. A footnote of the web-page indicates above said.

What Our Users Say About Us

I was wondering who the performers are for all these recordings? You mention the Georgian State String Quartet in the text, and they are also credited for String Quartets 4, 10 and 11, but the other string quartets and the other pieces have no performance information. I first heard a Tsintsadze piece in Bryant Park in Manhattan, but did not heard him again until I found your website. What a great resource - thank you very much!
